Honda’s Emergence as a Leader in Pakistan’s Auto Industry
The introduction of two extremely popular cars in Pakistan, the Honda Accord and the Honda Civic, at a time when cars with few if any frills were the only ones available, allowed Honda to capture auto consumers pretty rapidly. With its class and luxury Honda promised much more in terms of value and status for an affordable price.
Toyota had been the leader in the Pakistani car industry in terms of loyalty and sales way before Honda was even considered a noteworthy car. It had tactically launched several well-known models like the Corolla and Corona to capture almost all consumer segments of the market. Car manufacturers like Nissan, Mazda, Mercedes Suzuki, and Fiat, though not remotely close to Toyotas sales and reach, each had a few models for available in the market as well.
Hondas models had additional features and trims, which other car makers, competing in similar segments, did not offer at the time. Honda provided extra luxury like power windows and steering to the consumer at a reasonable price creating a perception of added value and worth. Several companies that had previously favored Toyota for their executive fleet were now purchasing Honda. The Accord and Civic became noticeably visible and commanded attention on the streets of Pakistan.
Honda stayed ahead of the competition with its consistency and fine design and craftsmanship. It was the first car in its class in Pakistan to offer an open interior and fabric seats. Both these features provided consumers with more comfort and enjoyment while traveling between and within cities. After successfully establishing its brand, Honda took on its strongest competitor, the Toyota Corolla, by introducing a similar sized engine model called City with better features and design. To control prices in the future, Honda soon began local production of its cars in collaboration with a locally well-recognized firm.
Honda earned a reputation of a reliable and fuel-efficient car due to its meticulous and high standard engineering. The beautifully fabricated engines provided users with a feeling of driving a larger, more powerful car, adding further value to their experience. Due to the minimal maintenance and its reliability, the demand for used Honda shot up and drove the resale prices closer to those commanded by Toyota. Unlike competing cars, which depreciated considerably in value, Honda was now being resold at higher than average prices.
Honda has succeeded in becoming one of the most admired cars in Pakistan in a considerably short period of time. Its impeccable reputation and mass appeal have made it a first choice for car users all over Pakistan. Its clean finish and new and better features, are all signs of Hondas continuing supremacy in Pakistans used and new car industry for a substantially long time to come.
