To save the cost of regular taxi rides, why not try a budget car rental and enjoy the independent experience it offers. Sometimes though, the companies that rent budget cars, supply cars that are at the bottom end of the spectrum. Do not forget, the idea is to rent a car inexpensively, not one that is destined to be scrapped the minute you return it. Now that I have you concerned, I am going to give you a few points to look for when arranging a rental car.

I have found that budget car rental using the internet as a resource is a good way to find a low cost car because some sites let you set a limit on what you are prepared to pay. Some of these sites are just comparison sites but well worth your time as they have done all the hard work for you. It is not unusual to find that package deals that incorporate a flight and rental car, provide other incentives such as a vehicle upgrade for instance although this is rarely the case if you book with one of the airlines directly. Of course the airlines realize they have a captive audience when people visit their site to book a flight and do not need to discount their car rental.

If you are not used to arranging budget car rental on the internet, do not let that put you off as you will be pleasantly surprised by the offers available. Some websites even go as far as internet only discounts which can save a great deal of money. Do not always take the first offer that comes your way, unless you are limited on time because there are bound to be other discount offers available if you have the time to take a look. Don’t forget that the only effort required to find these car rental deals is to logon to the internet, how easy is that.

You find your credit card company has another surprise when it has organized a discount with the budget car rental company on top of any you have already arranged. Many car rental companies have arranged special deals with large organizations to ensure they have more business, perhaps you are a member of one of these.

Most rental cars are low on maintenance so when you rent a car, check all sides for damage. In addition, try to check out all the accessories, wipers, radio, brakes, seat belts etc, to familiarize yourself with them, and also to check if they work, like the previous tip, you might be charged for this if you don’t inform them.

As far as rental car insurance is concerned, check your own before you pay out more for the rental company’s policy which you may not need. Rental car insurance doesn’t cost much, but if you already have one why buy another? It may not seem important but driving without auto insurance can land you in a great deal of trouble.

If you are an early bird you may find this last tip useful; when picking up your rental car, collect it first thing, just as the staff open the office doors because many of the vehicles will not have been returned and they may offer you an upgrade for free.
