A Green Bus Fund of 30m GBP has been setup by the UK Department of Transport to introduce low carbon buses in the fleet. This move is expected to add some 349 new low carbon buses to the total fleet. While this move can be considered as one of the important initiatives to control CO2 emissions and attain greener levels in environment conservation, we believe that this will be more of a test-case scenario and once the low carbon buses establish themselves as a reliable transport alternative, more such buses should be on the way.

The green bus fund has funds that could buy some 349 buses. Expectedly, most of these buses will be hybrid buses and at least 55 new electric buses will also be a part of the purchase.

This entire move is aimed towards attaining greener environment levels and cutting back the CO2 emissions levels in the UK. And with the impending Climate Summit in Copenhagen, Denmark this budgetary allocation and a resolve to use low carbon buses will establish UK’s credentials as one of the most environment friendly countries that is willing to cutback emissions for the sake of environment. Though the move is small when you compare it against the total fleet size of UK buses, it could become a precursor to bigger plans.

The upside to this resolve or decision is that the move will safeguard 1000 jobs across the UK manufacturing industry and it provides a good opportunity to the bus builders to stem their losses. The Department of Transport is happy at achieving greener environment levels and bringing in employment to skilled manforce in the UK.

The low carbon buses consume up to 30% less fuel than the conventional buses, and thereby they save or cut back on the standard CO2 emissions of conventional buses. While the move looks a good strategy to test the success of low carbon buses, we are assured of getting even higher number of low carbon buses in the future. With a 0.2% presence in the overall fleet of buses, low carbon buses have a huge potential to ensure that they become majority presence in the total fleet of UK buses.

Check your fleet fuel expense analyzed and select the most beneficial fuel card at our online business fuel cards store.
