GPS systems are now used for a number of everyday situations. You will no longer need to worry about paper maps when driving. You will no longer need to worry about getting lost in the woods when you take your family camping. Boaters and fishermen use them to avoid shallow water and no longer need to rely solely on lighthouses, landmarks and guesswork to keep from running aground. And parents can rest easier knowing that if their child gets lost, they will be able to find them.

Car GPS systems are probably the most recognized use of the GPS technology. Drivers use these GPS navigation systems by simply entering the address of their intended destination into the GPS device and then following the detailed directions the GPS devices reports back the correct course decisions to the driver. If the driver needs to go off the established course for any reason, the device will quickly recalculate the correct course from the new starting position. This feature alone is worth the price of the GPS system as it will save drivers tons of headaches by not subjecting them to large paper maps and a low wattage interior light on a dark night. What is also desirable is some of the new GPS devices that come equipped with a voice feature that allows drivers to keep their eyes where they should be – on the road.

Car GPS systems are used most extensively by consumers. Simply put the target address into the system and you get detailed directions from your current location to the destination. This beats having to plot the route out on your map. It comes in handy when you accidentally make wrong turns or have an unscheduled pit stop off your route. The GPS system will quickly recalculate a route to the desired location. This is immensely easy on drivers and they no longer have to deal with pulling the map out again and re-plotting their route. It is all done in seconds. Additionally, many GPS systems have a voice feature that gives audio instructions so that you may keep your eyes on the road. These GPS systems can also be incorporated in vehicles to show the nearest gas stations when the fuel level is low. They also can be programmed to show places of interest such as restaurants.

GPS navigation can also be used to keep track of wayward children. When children play outside, they rarely keep track of their present surroundings and the lost child is a story that is as old as Man. GPS tracking keeps this from having to happen again. Parents only need to use the GPS devices and they can find their child if he or she ever wanders off and gets lost.

If you have been shopping online for GPS you will already know that there are tons of different models and manufacturers out there. The market leader in GPS devices is Garmin. There are other big GPS companies such as Magellan and Tom Tom but Garmin is the one that is most recognizable. The number of different devices these manufacturers have brought to market is considerable. The best place to find them all and compare is to go online and see.

If you want to reduce your stress level on that long sales drive or simply want to keep your children safe from harm, getting a GPS system is a no brainer. Simply go online and search for the models and manufacturers so you can compare them side by side and get the best deals. The three names you will hear alot are Garmin, Magellan and Tom Tom. These are the ones with the biggest marketshare and will generally not steer you wrong. Between the three, there is a GPS system that is perfect for you.
