Buying a new car is like managing to score a date with the woman of your dreams — you never think past the first date. The short term is where we live in this great nation and don’t you forget it. Or at least try not to. There are many reasons why we Americans can’t see the forest for the trees and when it comes to cars we blind ourselves with egoistic bravado. Purchasing a reliable car that lasts decades isn’t as popular of an idea as logic would dictate. From new cars to used cars, buying a vehicle is tantamount to marriage.

Think of it as a Tarantino movie scored to a soul-beat soundtrack. It’s the first glance from across the parking lot. Then the tense approach. Insert shot of a gloved hand opening the front door. Slide in and grip the steering wheel slowly — maybe even in slow-motion. Did I mention that new car smell? Some things just don’t translated into film metaphors. You love the machine — you’re smitten, which begs the question: should you stay or should you go? Mick Jones, where are you now?

My 1995 Accord has been my partner for close to fifteen years and rarely do we quarrel. Yes, over our long partnership we have miscommunicated every once in a while — but as a whole we are happy. As a husband who can have a tendency to overlook the subtle messages from his wife, my Honda tries her hardest to keep me going in the right direction despite my insensitivity. Yes, like most men, we make things up in big ways. Whether it’s a ski trip to Aspen or a change of spark plugs, we make it work. Honda’s were made knowing how the average driver would treat it. Fast acceleration and sharp turns coupled with going a few thousand miles over the regular oil change is equal to forgetting to buy flowers on your anniversary.

Sure, it’s a kind of monogamy this thing we have, but I’m only human. When a newer, sleeker model cruises by I can’t help but look. But I’m satisfied with my loyal Accord. No need to fret — we’ve been in this for more than a decade. Consistency is underrated these days. Going A to B at forty to seventy miles an hour on a daily basis, to and back, seven days a week, for fifteen years is an incredible track record.

Think of Honda cars as a supportive wife who does the small things that makes your life more comfortable. Like handing us a mug of warm coffee in the morning or letting you watch your favorite sports team without any guilt trip. We as consumers should look for these qualities more often and not take our durable investments for granted. Even after all this time, every time I wash and wax my 1995 Honda Accord, I always hear the question, “How much do you want for it?” Just as a wife who has the time to pamper herself and spend a little more time in front of the mirror, she can always turn a stranger’s head. We always remember where we first met the love of our lives and where I met my partner in crime was at a used Honda dealership. You never know how something great will happen in your life but you definitely know it when it happens.

Before you fall head-over-heels for a new beauty, be sure you stop and take a moment to look into some used Honda deals. Think of the long-term and treat yourself to very best used Honda deals available anywhere.
